EXCLUSIVE: Kylie Cantrall Talks Season 2 of Gabby Duran and the Unsittables, New Music & More with BB
Season 2 of Gabby Duran and the Unsittables premiered on Disney Channel earlier this Summer and Kylie Cantrall is back as everyone’s favorite baby-sitter. We got the chance to chat with Cantrall about the new season, her upcoming movie, Ron’s Gone Wrong, her new music and so much more. Check out our interview below.
Season 2 of Gabby Duran and the Unsittables kicked off this past June, how do you think you have changed from filming Season 1 to Season 2?
“I had no idea what to expect on the first day of shooting the pilot. Being the lead of a series is very demanding. I have 9-hour workdays, 4 hours of school and having to memorize all my dialogue so I always know exactly what to say to these Aliens. Haha It’s more ‘fun’ than ‘work’ but I knew what to expect coming back for season 2… well kind of knew what to expect. hahaha”
What was the biggest obstacle you faced filming this season?
“Well, the obvious one that jumps to mind is ‘trying to make a tv show during a pandemic’. We had to create this weird ‘bubble’ with the cast and crew, no new people came into our world, and we really couldn’t go out. Plus, on set we had to be 6 feet from the director when he’s giving you notes, eating in your trailer by yourself and we couldn’t just walk by the food truck and grab a handful of M&Ms. And everyone knows I have a bit of a sweet tooth.
What do you love most about playing Gabby?
“I guess it’s the cool things Gabby gets to do in each episode. From the fight sequences, slime drenching, time travel, alien morphing and even battling a robot of myself. It’s really one of those shows that you never know what you’re getting thrown into until you show up on set and they’re like ‘Alright Kylie ready to get 42 pounds of mayonnaise poured on you?’ ‘Ummmm Oookayyyy’???”
You can read our full interview, including when we can expect new music from the star, below. Gabby Duran and the Unsittables is currently airing on Disney Channel.
How do you think Gabby has grown over the two seasons?
“I think Gabby goes from middle schooler, in season one, to full on teenager this season and it’s cool for viewers to see her mature and evolve. She also gets the opportunity to deal with more than just keeping secrets about Aliens. She faces political injustices, learns to embrace her Latin culture has a teen romance and a whole lot more… but I don’t want to ruin it for anyone”.
What has it been liking working for Disney?
“It’s been a dream come true. I remember being 6 years old and watching Disney shows like Wizards of Waverly Place/ Shake it Up and dreaming about having my own series. I’m living proof that if you dream big and visualize your goals you can make anything happen. And who knows, maybe this show will inspire some other young little star to chase their dreams”
You’re set to star in the new animated movie, Ron’s Gone Wrong, what was it like lending your voice to this movie?
“I had so much fun working on this animated film. It’s cool how every time I saw a new edit, the character was looking more and more like me. Plus, it’s amazing to get to work alongside such incredible actors like Zach Galafanakis, Ed Helms, and Jack Dylan Grazer. I did all my recording in Vancouver, so I haven’t really had a chance to meet them all personally. I’m hoping for some ‘Red Carpet’ magic when I meet Jack Dylan Grazer”
How did you end up landing the role?
“I auditioned at Paramount Studios and for the audition they just had me bring props and improvise on the microphone. It was one of the most fun auditions I’ve ever done. I remember I brought a bag of frozen broccoli and a Hershey Bar, then pretended to be the spokesperson for the all new ‘Chocolate Broccoli’ brand. The director was cracking up laughing… not so much with me… but more like “at me”.
How would you say your experience with voice acting compares to your experience with physical acting?
“Voice acting and physical acting are definitely very different. One of the biggest differences of voice acting is I’m not on camera which means I could show up to the recording studio in sweatpants, no makeup, chai tea latte in hand and don’t have to go through the 2hr process of getting ready like I would on a regular set! That’s a definite bonus.”
Would you like to do more voice acting roles?
“I would totally want to do more voice acting roles! If they brought back Dora the Explorer, I think I could definitely play the role of boots. Let’s just say it would be an easy part to play since boots doesn’t really have any lines lol.”
Music is such a big part of who you are, can you share what you have in store for fans on the music front?
“I just signed a record deal with APG and have a new single coming out next month featuring some very special artists. I’ve been in the studio working on so much material and hope to release an Ep by the end of the year. Stay tuned”
Can you share a little about your new sound?
“My sound is pop meets a little old school r&b flavor. Since I’m such a 90s lover, I try to incorporate a mix of some vibes I love from artists like Aaliyah and TLC in a new 2021 way.”
What else do you have in store for fans in the coming months?
“Hopefully some new merch in the next few months! I was so thrilled with the response from my last merch line and can’t wait to make some more pieces for my fans to rock!”
