Show of the Summer took over HersheyPark Stadium last night, June 28, in Hershey, PA. Shawn Mendes headlined the night with support from R5, Fifth Harmony and more.

Sabrina Carpenter opened the show by performing songs off her debut album Eyes Wide Open. The Girl Meets World star kicked off the evening with her show’s theme song to cheers from the younger audience members. The highlight of her set was her most recent single “Eyes Wide Open” which drew the biggest cheers and prepped the audience for the night ahead.

Youtube star Jacob Whitesides hit the stage next but kept his set relatively short. He was 20 minutes late to the stage and one of his band member’s apparently had issues with sound which delayed his performance. Jacob kept things simple for his short set, opting to play his guitar and sing in the center of the stage.

Jack and Jack bounced on stage and did their best to relate to the crowd. The pop/rap duo from Nebraska was filled with energy and seemed especially pleased by the size of the audience. They debuted a brand new song, “Shallow Love” during their set comparing it to Kanye West’s “Golddigger” (a little too ambitious but a fun song nonetheless).

R5 was nice change of pace from the pop/rap group, bringing an 80s rock vibe to the evening. The band played their own instruments and had the audience dancing on their feet. Lead singer, Ross Lynch, was especially charming and made a point to interact with the fans. The group also tested out several songs off their upcoming album highlighting how much the group has musically grown from their first album.

Fifth Harmony drew the wildest cheers of the night. The five piece girl group strutted their stuff, flipped their hair and shook their hips on stage much to the delight of their fans. The group whipped through several songs including their hits “Worth It” and “Sledgehammer” and did a nice job with their Mariah Carey medley. Lauren Jauregui and Normani Kordei really shined during their set. The two gave the best facial expressions and were vocally on point.

Shawn Mendes was the show’s closer and was certainly a huge draw. He sounded good but played a very mellow set which after the excitement and energy from Fifth Harmony was a hard way to close the show. Shawn is talented but didn’t seem the best choice to headline the Show of the Summer, especially after how pumped R5 and Fifth Harmony got the crowd.

Show of the Summer was a fun night and perfect way for pre-teens and teenagers to kick off the summer.
