We Are Your Friends Review
We Are Your Friends is set to hit theaters today, August 28. Zac Efron stars as aspiring DJ, Cole whose whole life changes when he meets up with veteran DJ, James (Wes Bentley) and his assistant, Sophie (Emily Ratajkowski).
The focus of the film is Cole’s journey to becoming a legendary DJ, but the plot loses itself from the start. When the audience is supposed to believe Cole is one step closer to achieving his goal, and a step closer to finding himself, the movie takes two giant leaps back. Zac did a decent job with the material he was given, but the story lacked consistency and depth.
In a story where the question is “Are we ever gonna be better than this?”, the audience is left hanging. There isn’t ever a definitive any definitive proof as to Cole and co. being the best in the San Fernando Valley. Wes Bentley, Emily Ratajkowski, Jonny Weston, and Shiloh Fernandez’s characters add no real value and are plot pieces to help keep the story going.
If you are a big fan of electric dance music you may find some enjoyment in it. The cinematography flowed well with the pumping beats and there are some funny moments, but all in all I would suggest waiting to see this movie until it comes out on DVD or On Demand.
