BeautifulBallad Reviews FOX’s Scream Queens

FOX’s newest horror comedy Scream Queens is the latest television creation from showrunner, Ryan Murphy (Glee) and will be airing its two-hour premiere tonight, September 22. Starring an A-list cast including Emma Roberts, Nick Jonas, Abigail Breslin, Lea Michele, Skylar Samuels, and Jamie Lee Curtis, this new tale follows the story of a pretentious and downright terrible sorority that is being terrorized by a serial killer called “Red Devil”.

As far as horror shows go, this one won’t leave you with the lights on at night and as far as comedic shows go, they are few and far between. The plot leaves a lot for the imagination and the characters either stand out or fall flat in the episodes.

Emma Roberts’ delicious portrayal of stuck up Chanel #1 is the nightmare roommate every college student hopes they do not get, while Nick Jonas’ portrayal of fratboy Boone was one of the major comedic highlights. Original Scream Queen, Jamie Lee Curtis excels as Dean Munsch and Niecy Nash provides great humor as Denise Hemphill.

The other characters introduced in the premiere were either unbearable or forgettable. Lea Michele’s Hester was one of the more hyped characters leading up to the premiere, but the character was a little too over the top and ended up falling flat in the episodes.

Overall, the premiere episode left me a little unsatisfied. The show has the potential to be a big hit, and will most likely be the first pilot to be renewed this season, but many of the scenes were a little too predictable and the dialogue can be downright corny at times. However, if you are a big horror fan or love Ryan Murphy’s past creations this show is for you.

Grade: B-

Dialogue teasers:

“I thought I was just having a bread baby”

“No one forced that goat to get drunk, that was on him”

“We’re just trying to have a nice time hitting golf balls at hippies”

“You’re confident without being mean…what antidepressants are you on?”

“Where are your hands…on the frog”
