Grandfathered & Grinder Review- One Out Laughs the Other
Tonight, September 29 FOX will unveil two new comedies, Grandfathered and Grinder. FOX has been kind of slacking in the comedy department recently, but the network is hoping these two pilots will revamp their Tuesday night comedy lineup.
Let’s start first with Grandfathered. Grandfathered stars Full House’s, John Stamos and Nickelodeon star, Josh Peck. In the series, Stamos plays bachelor Jimmy, who finds out he has a son (Peck) and granddaughter. The story revolves around Jimmy as he tries to not only be a father to Peck’s character, Gerald, but a grandfather to Edie his granddaughter.
This show was a little bit of a letdown. It was not bad, but it wasn’t as good as expected. The characters are fun, but the story felt kind of rushed. Hopefully as we get a couple more episodes in the pacing will get a little bit better. In my opinion, the show has the potential of being a big hit, but as of right now it’s only average.
Grinder, however, was the better of the two pilots. The show centers around Dean and Stewart Sanderson (Rob Lowe and Fred Savage). In the show, Dean played a television lawyer on a show called, The Grinder. After the show comes to an end, Dean decides to move back home and join his brother Stewart at their family’s law firm even though he has no law degree.
The chemistry between Lowe and Savage is a lot of fun. Lowe’s character is a little over the top, but when paired with Savage’s more conservative character you get spot on comedy. The dialogue is funny and the secondary characters are great additions to the already funny leads.
This pilot is a must watch for those looking for a new comedy to watch this season. It will definitely have you laughing and wanting to tune in next week for the next episode.
