Ariel Winter Acts Out the “5 Greatest Mean Girls of All Time” for Cosmo
Ariel Winter has teamed up with Cosmopolitan to act out the “5 Greatest Mean Girls of All Time”. Ariel takes on the roles of Regina George, Nancy Downs, Blair Waldorf, Amber and Heather Chandler for the shoot.
During her interview with Cosmo, Ariel talked why people idolize characters like Regina George, the word b*tch, if she admires anything about these characters and so much more. Highlights can be found below.
On why people idolize Regina George: “Well, because she’s the ideal; she is the standard. When I was younger, we didn’t have a lot of role models that were not Regina George-like. We didn’t have a lot of super-nice women who were just OK being themselves — didn’t have to dress in designer clothes, didn’t have to bleach blonde their hair, didn’t have to limit themselves at every meal. That promoted a lot of insecurity.
People love her so much because they’re like, “Wow, I wish I could be like her.” Even people who have been rejected by Regina George-like people, I notice that they turn around and try to become the other way — they try to be like Regina. It’s just disappointing that that’s what they consider a perfect girl.”
On if she admires anything about these characters: “You have to admire their honesty. [Laughs.] They’re pretty unabashed about the things that they feel. But at the same time, I don’t really admire somebody who deliberately goes out of her way to hurt other people. Being mean to people is not cool. And why I found it so awesome to do this shoot and play these characters is that I’m right now trying to speak out against bullying and people tearing others down, and I love that I got to play these characters and trump them in a sense. I got to overtake them. What they do is not right — and I’m above it.”
