What the Addition of DC Comics’ Artemis Could Mean for Arrow Season 5

It was announced today, June 21 that Arrow Season 4 guest star Madison McLaughlin would be returning in multiple episodes of Arrow’s upcoming fifth season. First introduced in the show as Evelyn Crawford, an aspiring vigilante, the character will be taking on the superhero persona of Artemis.

For those who don’t know, in the comics and the Young Justice TV series Artemis is the an archer who is the daughter of Sportsmaster and Huntress, the younger sister to Chesire and former protégé of Green Arrow. She is also a love interest to Wally West and eventually takes on the persona of Tigress after faking her own death.

The addition of Artemis to the show opens a lot of doors for many of the characters, starting first with Oliver. Most likely, Oliver will take her under wing as his protégé, in hopes that she will become his sidekick like Red Arrow and Speedy. My hope is that Oliver and Evelyn’s relationship will be a little more like his and Roy’s was in the third season. The two had their ups and downs, but ultimately they were great in the field together.

Speaking of Roy (Colton Haynes) aka Red Arrow, we know that Colton will be returning for a number of episodes this coming season. These two had a rocky relationship in the comics and animated series as Red Arrow did not like being “replaced” by Artemis. In the series, I could see the writers going down this path, which would create fun friction scenes between the two. It would also create a little tension between Oliver and Roy, which is always fun.

Thea could also be affected by the addition of Artemis. In the comics Artemis’s sister, Chesire was once a member of the League of Shadows and is married to Red Arrow. Thea was never a member of the League of Shadows, but did deal with them and the Lazarus Pit for the past two seasons. Her father is also a member of the League. And although Thea would not be a real sister to Evelyn, unless there is something the writers know that we don’t, she could take on the role of a pseudo sister. This could show the audience a side to Thea we haven’t seen before.

I am also intrigued to see if they bring in the Artemis/Wally West relatioship, or at least the beginning of it. This could happen during the four show crossover occuring this year and it could be a way for the writers to introduce Wally into the Arrow series, but I guess we will have to see.

Are you guys excited for the addition of Artemis to the show? How do you think she will affect Season 5?
