REVIEW: Deepwater Horizon Will Have You On the Edge of Your Seat

What happens when chaos, tension and a whole lot of action is mixed? Answer: Deepwater Horizon. Based on the true events that took place aboard the Deepwater Horizon oil rig on April 20, 2010, viewers will be on the edge of their seats and biting their nails as they watch the explosion and subsequent sinking of the oil rig with some of our favorite actors and actresses on board.

Director Peter Berg’s ability to make the viewer feel as though they are actually on board during the explosion is fantastic. Start to finish, viewers will be engaged with every part of the story; from the scenes between the BP Oil Executives and the rig workers to the action packed scenes of the crews’ quest for survival all combine for one wild ride. Berg does a nice job explaining how and why the explosion happened without losing the audience.

The film opens with what happened on that terrible day, told through the eyes of the workers and the eyes of the rig. His use of the camera was spot on with incredible moments of panning over the ocean joined with intricate details of the oil rig with a bit of the Deepwater Horizon’s history mixed in.

Mark Wahlberg takes the lead as the rig’s chief electrician, Mike Williams, and does a great job leading the movie and Kurt Russell shines as supervisor Mr. Jimmy. Gina Rodriguez is wonderful as dynamic positioning officer, Andrea Fleytas.

Dylan O’Brien, as rig worker Caleb Holloway, proves he has what it takes to star in an action film and shows he can hold his own alongside these veteran actors.John Malkovich does such a nice job of embodying his character, BP worker Don Vidrine, it wall make viewers want to throw something through the screen.

Deepwater Horizon is a high intensity ride that will have viewers readily waiting for every bump, turn, and twist. Honestly, this movie is definitely worth seeing in theaters, especially in IMAX.
