THOUGHTS: New Power Rangers Trailer Reveals a Darker Morphin Time

Lionsgate released the first footage from the Power Rangers movie Saturday, October 8. Based on the hit 90’s children’s show, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, fans have been eagerly awaiting the first footage from the movie and they were not disappointed. The action packed teaser trailer introduced the five teenagers who would soon be saving Angel Grove as the Power Rangers, how they come across their new powers and the movie’s villain, Rita Repulsa (played by Elizabeth Banks).

As a diehard fan of the series growing up, I was expecting the new movie to follow the same storyline as the show and for the characters to be similar to the originals. However, I was in for quite the surprise. The characters’ storylines and how they become rangers looks to be vastly different from the show. Also, the addition of superpowers due to their merging with the power coins destroyed the original show’s idea of the characters being “normal” teenagers.

After watching the trailer a couple more times, I can say that my opinion is starting to change. The creators had two ways they could go about bringing this reboot to the big screen: they could go the super cheesy route like the original show or opt for a darker, far more serious path. By the looks of the trailer, they opted for the darker and edgier version, which could prove to be a fun and interesting tactic. This decision ups the drama factor and allows for there to be more chemistry and tension between the team.

There are still a couple things from the trailer I can’t get behind (Kimberly and Jason!!), but the more I see from the movie, the more I warm up to it. Hopefully, this new take on the Power Rangers will be just as good as the original show, but only time will tell.

What were your thoughts on the trailer? Are you excited to see the movie when it hits theaters on March 24?
