Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart Talk Riverdale with WWD
Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart both took part in separate shoots for WWD to promote their new show, Riverdale. During their shoots, the duo talked the show, their characters, and so much more. Highlights can be found below.
Cole on his attempt to fade out of Hollywood: “The goal for me to go to college, and my brother as well, was to fade out. It’s no new narrative to say that when people get out of child stardom, they often times rebel in very serious ways. I didn’t want to make that public spectacle.
So part of the reason I went to college was that I wanted to fade out peacefully, show everybody I had gone through something that was quite challenging and difficult, but did so with grace and poise and got an education.…By the end of it what I hadn’t interpreted was the rise of social media, which kind of kept my brother and I alive in strange, underground sub-circles.”
Cole on his character Jughead: “He’s very much an outsider,” he says. “He has a pretty unique perspective because he’s seeing the town and the friendship and the friendships that are forming from a more objective point of view. He eavesdrops, he listens, he’s the guy with the camera, snooping, sleuthing, and in that way, he’s distanced himself from a lot of the people in the town, through his own fear of being vulnerable and his inability to cope with people.”
Lili on her character Betty: “Our Betty Cooper is still the girl next door — she literally lives next to Archie. And she’s the blonde all-American girl, she’s so sweet and forgiving, gives people the benefit of the doubt and second chances, wears her heart on her sleeve.
But she’s also incredibly broken on the inside, for many different reasons. For one thing, she suffers from mental health issues, and that’s something that I resonate with — I struggle with depression and anxiety, and I’m very open about that. So I can very much relate to Betty in that way, and that there’s a vulnerability inside.”
