Lili Reinhart & Camila Mendes Chat Friendship, Depression, & Riverdale In New Feature
Camila Mendes and Lili Reinhart are featured in a new feature for Obsessee. The young ladies are in the feature to promote their new series Riverdale. Highlights are below.
Camila on the difficulties of social media: “People are growing up in an interesting time right now where social media dictates our image of perfection. We have all of these social media–famous people now who have set this bar, and it’s a very unrealistic bar. I start following models on Instagram and I get in this spiral where I follow one and then follow the next, and I’m like, why do I follow them? Every day, you look at that when you’re scrolling through your feed, and you start to feel like it’s normal. Everyone is different.”
Lili on her personal struggles: “I grew up with anxiety and depression, and going through high school, I felt entirely out of place. I felt very underwhelmed by the high school experience, and though I definitely felt pressure to be more social and not be so introverted, that’s just honestly who I am. I didn’t like to go to parties. I didn’t like to drink. That wasn’t fun to me, because from a very young age, I knew what I wanted to do: act and live in L.A. I was so ready to just get out of the small town that I grew up in and pursue my dreams.”
Camila on Cole Sprouse’s advice to her: “Yesterday, I was in the car with @colesprouse, and I was saying how I get home and I don’t do anything. I just go to sleep and I feel so useless, and he was like, ‘You’re the lead in a TV show, you’re working 15-hour days, your show is about to air, you need to chill. You’re 22 years old, you just got out of college, you’re right where you need to be.’ Because of the way we grow up so fast now, we start to think we should be at a higher place. We don’t appreciate where we are in our process, and we always feel we need to be on the next level. We can’t just take a second.”
Lili on strong relationships/friendships: “I was a really socially anxious kid, so I’ve always had the same small group of five or six friends. My best friend in the world, who I still have today, I met in sixth grade. At times, I didn’t feel great—like I wasn’t as popular—but now that I’m 20 and working, I realize how valuable it is to just have a small number of really close, strong friendships. That, to me, is a lot more valuable than a bunch of friends who only kind of know you.”
