REVIEW: Fist Fight Lacks Fight
Fist Fight is a colossal waste of an hour and a half. It is a wonder how the film even made it to the big screen with a story this weak and the laughs few and far between. It tells the tale of two teachers, Andy Campbell (Charlie Day) and Rob Strickland (Ice Cub), who butt heads on the last day of the school year. The actual non-issue leads Strickland to challenge Campbell to a physical fight after school which inevitably the entire school and town find out about.
This feeble film then spends the rest of its time following Campbell as he tries everything possible to get out it. Despite only being 90 minutes long, the flick feels much longer. It’s hard to find any of the characters charming or even likable, though Tracey Morgan as gym teacher Freddie Coward comes the closest. Ice Cube’s Strickland has some serious anger management issues and is exceptionally unrealistic. Jillian Bell’s character, Counselor Holly, is disgusting and inappropriate with zero redeemable qualities. And Charlie Day’s Campbell is not a character worth rooting for at the end of the day. The things he does to try and get out of the fight are just plain pathetic, illegal, and inappropriate.
Fist Fight is a drawn out waste of time. The movie is supposed to be a comedy but the only good part is a brief moment towards the end between Campbell and his daughter. Other than that, I would not waste money on seeing this in theaters or even renting it when it comes out on Blu-Ray/DVD.
