REVIEW: Wonder Woman is the Movie DC Universe Fans Have Been Waiting For
The DC Universe is back in the superhero game! Not since The Dark Knight trilogy has a DC Universe film truly lived up to its hype, but Wonder Woman has done just that. Filled with action, romance, a solid story and much more, director Patty Jenkins has brought to life one of the better superhero origin story movies to date.
Wonder Woman is the story of Diana, Princess of Themyscira (Gal Gadot), born to Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons (Connie Nielsen). Diana wants nothing more than to become a warrior like her Amazonian sisters. Shut off from mankind, Diana trains alongside the Amazonian Warriors until one day Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) crash lands on their island and turns Diana’s world upside down.
The introduction of Wonder Woman in Batman v. Superman was one of the main highlights from what was a lackluster movie. Gal Gadot’s portrayal of her in that left fans chomping at the bit for her own solo movie and she does not disappoint. Gadot brings a regal strength to the character, even during Diana’s fish out of water moments while stomping around Europe with Steve. She truly shines in this film and will definitely be remembered as Wonder Woman for years to come. Chris Pine is just as great, he has a number of comedic scenes, which Pine plays with ease, and his chemistry with Gadot is really fun to watch.
Unlike prior DC films, this movie has a lighter, more refreshing tone. It doesn’t feel so dark and dreary, which is due in large part to Jenkins direction instead of Zack Snyder, who shot the last two DC Universe films. Jenkins was unafraid of adding more comedy and bringing a bit of cheer to this film, and it pays off.
Wonder Woman doesn’t stray too far from the character’s original comic origin story. There are some tweaks here and there, but unlike other DC Universe films, which left you saying, “But he would never do that”, this one will leave you applauding. The small faults are the film runs a tad too long and the slow motion special effects are too heavily used. But this is a movie definitely worth seeing in theaters. It gets straight to the point and leaves no questions unanswered. Fans of Wonder Woman and fans of the DC Universe will not be disappointed with this movie.
