Maia Mitchell Talks How Events from The Fosters’ Season 5 Premiere Will Affect Callie This Season
The Fosters aired its Season 5 premiere last night, July 10 and it was a big episode of Maia Mitchell’s character, Callie. Callie went through a pretty eye opening set of events, which she luckily walked away from unharm.
We talked with Maia about the events from last night’s episode and how the events will change Maia going foward. Highlights from our interview can be found below.
On how Callie will be impacted by the events in the hotel going forward:
“You are seeing her raw and that definitely influences the decisions she make going forward. This whole situation is going to be a huge wake up call for her. You’re going to see her try to turn things around. I think it is the biggest turning point in her life, so it’s huge for her.”
On if Callie will catch a break this season:
“Callie’s never really going to have a break. She attracts people that challenge her and just bring this impulsiveness out of her.”
On Stef’s words to Callie valuing her life will finally resonate with her:
“The speech Stef gives to Callie at the end of the premiere, she says quite bluntly and quite pointedly: ‘Next time you are not going to be so lucky and you are going to be carried out in a body bag’. I honestly think Callie needs to hear it in that way: directly, no fluff, just straight at her. And from Stef who she respects a lot and who also shares her sense of social justice and her impulsive need to help people. Her and Stef connect over that. So, to hear that from Stef, I think, is exactly what Callie needed.
As horrible as this situation has been for her, I think she needed a life-threatening wake up call to this extent. Yes, Troy confessed and, yes, Stef saved her at the opportune moment, but that’s all luck. None of that is Callie’s doing and next time she’s not going to be lucky. If it weren’t for other people or external forces, Callie would not be alive. I think that really hits on her. Rather than it being like a relief and like a ‘Oh, I’m good’, there’s this kind of weight of needing to turn her life around and she really does.”
On how Callie will turn her life around:
“She tries to control those impulsiveness traits. She definitely invests her energy in other ways. Her art becomes key to her this season. She meets someone who becomes a mentor for her in that space and she starts exploring who she is as an artist, her potential for college and turning that [her art] into something really productive and exciting. She is definitely thinking about the future and trying to turn it around for her. As horrible as the whole ordeal has been, I think it was exactly what she needed.”

On if what happens in the episode will affect her relationship with Aaron:
“Aaron is a really good influence on Callie because he appreciates and also shares her sense of selflessness, need to help other people, and activism. They connect over that, but he also is a safe person for her. He is an anchor, he is very stable, he is constant, he is reliable and definitely encourages her to make decisiions for herself that aren’t as impulsive and more calculated and more productive. He definitely appreciates her motives, so he sticks around after all of this. He definitely is going to influence her in a positive way.”
On if this will impact her trial:
“You’ll just have to wait and see! As far as that’s concerned it’s more about moving forward and a fresh start.”
On if we will get to see her family’s reaction to her going off with Diamond:
“They’ve all got their own stuff going on. Brandon and Jesus’ relationship is tested and Jesus is dealing with his TBI. You’ll see his relationship with Emma be put to the test and be quite vulnerable. Marianna is always in her own world. Sttef and Lena keep a watchful eye over Callie this season. Constantly checking in and making sure that everything she is doing is on the right track.”
On if the family will finally catch a break this season:
“No, not really. A little bit, but no, these kids attract trouble. They’re trouble! Between Stef and Lena’s relationship together and managing that, you know marriage is hard. You are going to see them working on their marriage. They have a lot on their hands. These kids, they have good intentions and their all smart, raised well by their parents, but they attract drama and you are going to see plenty of that this season.”
On working with their numerous guest stars:
“I love working with different guest stars. All of these situations bring really talented people. Hope Olaidé Wilson (Diamond), who I’ve actually worked with, I worked with her when I was 17, so getting to work with her again was amazing, I love it.
On the guest star she is excited for fans to see:
“I’m obsessed with Meg [DeLacy], who plays Grace and her storyline becomes particularly interesting with Brandon. I haven’t had the chance to work with her that much, but I’ve seen her work and she’s gorgeous. I am very, very excited for the fans to see that relationship develop. There’s kind of a reveal with her, so I am excited for that to play out.”
