REVIEW: Dunkirk Is A Refreshing Splash Of Water Amidst Of Summer Full Of Burns
Dunkirk is an intense ride that is a must see for the Summer. Directed by Christopher Nolan, this new film tells the story of the evacuation of British soldiers from Dunkirk, France during World War II.
The cinematography is as wonderful as one would expect from a Nolan film. Shot in IMAX, the audience will feel as though they are right beside the soldiers as they fight for their lives on land, sea, and in the air. The true life tale is hauntingly depicted on the screen, with low color tones and glorious shots of places where the evacuation actually occurred.
Nolan has a knack for creating strong ensemble casts and he does so again with Dunkirk. Veterans Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, James D’Arcy, and Kenneth Branagh bring to life the struggles civilians and members of the British forces faced during this evacuation. Harry Styles and Fionn Whitehead, newcomers to the big screen, give moving performances. The two are tasked with some of the most intense scenes in the film and they did a nice job rising to the occasion.
The film is light on dialogue, relying heavily on the actions and location to tell the gripping story of the British evacuation. What makes Dunkirk so great is it does not sugar coat what happened. Nolan shows that happy endings are far and few between. The endeavors the soldiers, Naval officers, and Royal Air Force pilots faced in this situation were not only daunting but consistently teetering on hopeless.
I recommend you see this film in IMAX. Even though it was shot for it, the details are exceptional on a bigger screen.
