Andrew Garfield Opens Up About His Role As Robin Cavendish In New Film Breathe
Andrew Garfield opened up about his upcoming role as Robin Cavendish in Andy Serkis directorial debut Breathe. In the film, Andrew’s character is given three months to live after being paralysed from polio. Highlights from the interview are below.
On his reaction to reading the script: “I was just devastated by Bill’s [Nicholson] script,. It was so beautifully and poetically executed, and so tender in its unfolding. It was just full of magic. It felt like a road map for living a life of joy whatever the hand that fate deals you. It never felt saccharine or sentimental; it felt honest, specific, and full of wisdom.”
On having Jonathan Cavendish on set while filming: “Claire Foy, who plays Diana, and I both fell in love with the story and we wanted to do justice to the life that they lived. The best barometer of that was Jonathan, so we would look to him for help all the time. He wanted us to own the characters, but we wanted him to own the characters too.”
On the most challenging part of the role: “The voice was the main challenge, but also the stillness, and how that affects the face, how much more active it makes the eyes. I think his inner life became much more vivid because of his inability to have a physical life in the same way that he did before.”
Breathe will open in select theaters on October 13.
