BB Exclusive: Burkely Duffield Talks Season 2 of Beyond
Tonight, January 18, Freeform will premiere the second season of its hit show, Beyond. The show was an instant hit on the network after it’s first season was released, in full, last year.
To celebrate tonight’s premiere we chatted with the star of the show, Burkely Duffield. In our interview with Burkely, we talk what’s to come in Season 2 for Holden, his relationship with Willa and Charlie, Luke and so much more. You can check it out below.
What was your reaction to the show’s Season 2 pickup?
“Just an overwhelming happiness. I mean this job has been such an amazing experience. Being able to work with such a talented group, we’ve created such an awesome family so to be able to have that and be able to come back to that to shoot more, and shoot this amazing new season that we had, was just a dream come true.”
What can you tell us about Season 2 and what’s in store for your character:
“The show’s going to pick up a couple months after season 1 and you see that he is really attempting to strive for that normal life that he wanted. Having sort of put the consequence of Season 1 behind him, he has started a real job with his dad, patched things up with his family and he’s moving forward with a real world relationship with Willa. You sort of see him putting those new aspects of his life first and trying to move forward with this new normal life that he wants.”
What is in store for Willa and Holden?
“It’s going to be a rocky right off the bat. It’s sort of a first for both of them, the first actual relationship. I can relate as I believe anyone can relate, first relationships, no matter how old you are, it’s a difficult one to start feeling out who you’re with and what it means to be together. Especially having it been their first relationship it’s definitely going to be a bumpy path. Hopefully, considering how much they care for each other, they’ll be able to work it out and to be able to continue down that path together.”
Where will find Holden at the beginning of the season:
“He really just wants to be a normal 25 year old and who’s just sort of living a normal life. You will see very, very soon going into this season that despite Holden’s unwillingness to go back into the realm, even though he’s not seeking out the realm this year, the realm has been tampered with. This time the realm is bleeding into Holden’s real life and the world he calls home. So you’ll see a lot of dangers that are being sent into the real world and are out to get Holden.”

Will we see more team ups between Luke and Holden in Season 2?
“I mean I would hope so. I mean you saw a little bit of it last season. You see the brothers, at least as you said, on the same side and in the know. You will see that this year, but you definitely see two different opinions on how Holden should be addressing his abilities. Luke is very adamant about wanting to have Holden using his abilities to be a hero, to be proud, to be someone people can look up to and to aspire to. But Holden sees these abilities as a burden. You see the brothers at least on the same page this year, which is great, but definitely on different pages in how Holden should be living his life which can definitely lead to some heated brotherly spats.”
Will Charlie cause problems for Willa and Holden?
“Yeah, you sort of see this hesitation where Holden is remembering the girl Charlie was and having really had no closure. Charlie ran away to who knows where, that it’s sort of this idealistic what happened and who was that. He’s sort of shocked at how similar they really were as opposed to him working together with Willa because they are really quite different. So it’s definitely clouding his vision right now and his love life. “
What can you tell us about the relationship between Holden and Stevie?
“It’s definitely complicated. Holden has encountered his first bully that is seemingly picking on the Boss’s son at his workplace and that he’s the weak guy that he decides to come down on. And as the audience knows, Holden is the last thing from being weak when you have his abilities. It’s definitely another very cool aspect to realize having someone prey upon someone. It is a cool bully aspect to dive into on the show but it puts Holden in a very interesting situation where he’s going to have to try to keep his abilities in check and hopefully Stevie won’t bring out the worst of them. Hopefully not in the workplace where everyone could find out who he really is.”
Tell us about Edgar Abbott. How is he going to come into play this season?
“Yes. We meet this new character, Edgar Abbott, who is a very cool character and will become more and more prominent in the season. He is someone who, as you can see in the little teaser that was released, has very similar circumstances to Holden. It would appear he had a traumatic experience as a kid with the big tornado whipping around and he sees this otherworldly light shine on him, so seemingly he had the same circumstances as Holden. Whether this is a new friend for Holden, perhaps they can relate over that circumstance, or maybe not quite the same and Edgar will be Holden’s new foe for this season. It’s something we’ll find out in the season but he is definitely an interesting character that we’ll learn more about.”
What would you say is the biggest threat to Holden in this season?
“The biggest threat to Holden, is that the realm is coming to attack Holden this year We saw last year that he went into the realm to seek out answers to the real world problems with Hollow sky. Thankfully after defeating Hollow sky, this year the realm is now sending some of its evil into the real world to come and attack Holden. How it’s going to embody that in the real world and how it’s going to embody that danger, we’re going to figure out quite soon. But I will say that unfortunately Holden’s normal life that he wants is not going to be very normal for very long.”
What can fans expect from this season?
“Fans can expect a lot of fun. We introduced the characters last year and got to know some of their stories and we put them on this amazing journey. Season 2 we get to see more of these characters, more of their relationships which are so fun. The beloved love triangle between Holden, Willa and Charlie. You see a lot more of the family dynamics between Holden and Luke butting heads but also having that brotherly love. As well as the family dynamic of who knows Holden’s secret and for how long can he keep things a secret. You also meet some really cool bad guys this year that we do cool action sequences with and have some really heated moments with. I’m very excited for fans to see it. I was so excited reading season 2 and I think we did a really good job in every department creating it. I’m very happy with what we have and can only hope that fans enjoy it as much as I did.”
