Yara Shahidi Covers The New Issue Of Essence Magazine

So honored to be able to grace my second Essence cover✨ Team @essence has been so extremely supportive since -quite literally- day one. My first feature was at 9-ish, talking about the importance of @anikaaroundtheworld in Princess and The Frog. Always celebrating every aspect of our community and our heritage in a way that we deserve to be celebrated. Thank you for seeing me and thank you for letting be me and highlighting the beauty of authenticity. So grateful to the real OGs, team Essence: @vanessa_kdeluca @thompsonproject @traceysees @corimurray @missjulee @zebablay (who wrote the cover story ☺) @sophyholland (for capturing my essence😜) and thank you to my amazing team: @chocolatemommyluv @afshinashahidi (my honest to goodness day ones) @ascend_pr @jasonbolden @emilychengmakeup @naivashaintl @starburleigh ⚡⚡⚡

Yara Shahidi is on the cover of the new issue of Essence magazine. The young actress is on the cover to promote the upcoming season finale of grown-ish. Highlights from her interview are below.

On the world of Hollywood: “I’ve always struggled with Hollywood feeling trivial. Red carpets aren’t worth it. As fun as it is to get dressed up, it is surreal to be sitting at the Teen Choice Awards while [something like] Charlottesville is happening.”

On being a socially active teen: “I feel comfortable putting my political stances out there without feeling as though I am filling some sort of quota. I don’t have a wokeness quota for the day.”
