REVIEW: Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger is the Must Watch Show of the Summer

In the past 10 years, Marvel has released a slew of different movies and TV shows ranging in characters and themes like the Avengers, Spider-Man, the X-Men, Daredevil, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Now, the powerhouse is stepping into a new territory with the release of their first Freeform TV series, Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger.

Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger is set in post Hurricane Katrina New Orleans and follows two teenagers, Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph). The pair have a run in at a local party where they find not only do they have superpowers, but there is a mysterious link to one another, as well.

Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger is this Summer’s must watch show. Sexy, realistic and addicting, creator Joe Pokasi has found a way to take what could have been the typical young adult drama and make it something more compelling for all audiences. Tandy and Tyrone’s differing backgrounds and unusual problems allow you to invest in their characters and their relationship. These aren’t your typical superhero problems, these are problems young adults struggle to overcome everyday. From race to monetary needs to the pains of just growing up, anyone watching this show will find a way to relate to one or both characters.

Aubrey Joseph is a newcomer to the TV screen, but one wouldn’t think that when watching him as Tyrone. Aubrey brings an innocence and a vulnerability to Tyrone that will have audiences already supporting him in the premiere and rooting for him throughout the season. Olivia is veteran to the TV screen as the star previously led her own Disney Channel show, I Didn’t Do It. While her previous role called for a younger performance from Olivia there is nothing childish about her portrayal of Tandy. The best way to describe Tandy is she has seen some intense things in her life and Olivia plays her with such shine.

The biggest standout is the chemistry between the two leads. The strongest scenes in the premiere are ones where Tandy and Tyrone are together. Olivia and Aubrey have created a camaraderie and a level of familiarity that can take some casts seasons to established. Fans will be begging to see more of them together before the episode is over.

This is a can’t miss Summer show and one we highly recommend tuning in for. Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger premieres tonight, June 7 on Freeform. Looks like they have found their next big hit with this one and you will not want to miss a second of it.
