BB Exclusive: Violett Beane Dishes on her New Show, God Friended Me

Last month, CBS premiered their brand new series, God Friended Me. The series stars Brandon Michael Hall and Violett Beane and it follows Mile, who is friended on Facebook by an account calling itself “God”. We had the amazing opportunity to sit down with Violett to talk about her new hit CBS show, which was just picked up for a full season order.

On her new show, God Friended Me:
God Friended Me is a family drama about a guy [Miles] who’s an Atheist that is friended by someone calling himself “God” on Facebook. Miles then starts getting these friend suggestions and ends up helping these friend suggestions deal with things going on in their lives.”

On her character, Cara:
“I play Cara Bloom and she is actually is one of Miles’ friend suggestions. When you meet her, you see that her Mom left when she was young and she has never really dealt with that. She sets out to find her and she does, but she really doesn’t know how to take that next step. That is when Miles and the God account step in and they end up helping Cara with her mom and so she decides to stick around and team up with them.”

On Miles and Cara’s relationship:
“I think they both challenge each other in ways they weren’t expecting. It interests them, it piques both of their interests. Cara is the believer of the two with Miles being the Atheist so she pushes his buttons. She’s like ‘Don’t you think there’s a chance this all connected. That fate is a real thing’. She pushes him in that way and I think they both really enjoy each other’s company.”

On how this show is different from other shows out there:
“Ultimately, I think they [Bryan Wynbrandt and Steven Lilien] want to keep the dynamic interesting. What I think has been pretty amazing is Bryan and Steven, the creators of the show, have been so open with us throughout the whole process. After each table read they call us and they want to know if there are things we don’t like, so I think that is really special. It is not something you always get when you are a part of a bigger machine or a part of a story that has already been written. Something that is great about this show is it is such a new idea and we are all kind of finding it together.”

On if she would accept a friend request from God:

“I’d think you’d have to. I think curiosity alone would make me accept the request. But I don’t know if I am as a good as a person as Miles. He goes on these quests daily to help people, but, yeah, I would have to accept the request.”

On Cara’s relationship with her Mom:
“They’ve reconnected but it’s going to be somewhat difficult to just act like nothing happened and move on. Throughout the season, I think you will see how that relationship is able to develop if it is. She has another daughter, another family, Cara has another family, so we are going to start seeing that dynamic unfold.”

On what else we can expect from Cara this season:
“She’s a journalist and she has realized with this God account that she is getting some pretty powerful stories and she is not the only one that has noticed. There is definitely going to be some development with her career path and, hopefully, making moves in that way.”

On if there will be any connection between Miles’ podcast and her journalism:
“No, but I can totally see that happening. He has guests come on his podcast all the time”.

On if she would ever consider starting a lifestyle blog based on her love for creating new vegan recipes and DIY home design:
“I really love coming up with new recipes and baking specifically. It would be fun to do that. I follow a lot of people on Instagram that have blogs like that and that is a full-time job. They’re constantly on there and I feel like I am already on my screen too much.”

On teaming up with PETA for their All Animals Have the Same Parts campaign:
“This campaign was cool because it is just telling us that all animals, all people, everything has the same parts. We all just want to be loved. Whether it’s a dog or a cat or a cow or a pig or you, we are all living beings and we shouldn’t take it into our own hands to hurt animals for our own wellbeing.

On if she learned anything while doing the campaign that she hadn’t known before:
“Yeah, I learned, and maybe I always knew it, people have a lot of opinions and they’re often times fear base opinions. I got a lot of comments from people saying, ‘Why do you have to shove this down our throats? Why are you putting this in front of us?’ Some people are very passionate when they feel that something is going to be taken away from them and fear is what drives negativity, I believe. It is a defense mechanism and I feel that once we are able to break that wall and just have a conversation things could be better.

On if she will return to The Flash:

“I definitely think it is totally possible that Jessie will come back. I’ve loved playing her. Putting the suit on and running around is so much fun, so I definitely think is if possible. The CW and CBS are sister networks, so we’ll see.”
