Freeform’s The Truth About Christmas Has The Perfect Amount Of Holiday Cheese
Freeform continues their new tradition of Holiday movies with the release of The Truth About Christmas. Starring Kali Hawk and Damon Dayoub, The Truth About Christmas follows, Jillian a young political consultant at the peak of her career who has a run in with a “Gucci” Santa while out searching for a gift for her boyfriend’s niece. This Santa warns Jillian her lies have consequences, but she quickly brushes him off. As she heads to her boyfriend, George’s home for the first time to meet his family, Jillian realizes that what “Gucci” Santa said to her was not just words, but a curse of some form as she now finds she can no longer lie, which makes her first meeting with George’s family quite interesting.
The story itself is fun, but lacks fluidity. Jillian struggles with her newfound ability to not lie, which leads to some really funny moments throughout. However, viewers are only shown glimpses as to why Jillian was even placed under the spell in the first place. The secondary characters, such as George’s family, are also thrown in and out of scenes with Jillian that viewers never really understand the relationship developed between them and Jillian.
Kali Hawk plays the role of Jillian and she is such a joy to watch. Kali has a great sense for comedic timing and looked quite at home on the stage during her character’s stand-up routine. Damon Dayoub plays Jillian’s boyfriend, and city councilman, George. In the grand scheme of things, George is a plot piece used to move Jillian’s story forward, but Damon does a wonderful job of showcasing George’s dedication and love to Jillian through their fantastic chemistry.
The Truth About Christmas is as cheesy as one would hope a Holiday movie to be, filled with the right amount of predictability and a dash good feelings. However it’s the film’s refreshing ending that sets this one apart.
