REVIEW: Grown-ish Season 2 Is Off To A Better Start Than Zoey’s Sophomore Year

Grown-ish returns tonight, January 2, for its second season and fans are in for a treat. Zoey Johnson returns to CalU to start her sophomore year and she is determined to have a better year than her freshman year. With her girls by her side, Zoey believes that her second year in college will be everything her freshman year was not, more adult, more chic, more Zoey, until she gets a look at her humble abode for the year. From there, everything seems to be falling out-of-place for Zoey and her hopes of having a spectacular look to be flying out her high-rise window.

As always, these two new episodes really set up the ground work for whats to come during the upcoming season. From potential trouble in paradise for Zoey and Luca to some potential drama between Francia Raisa’s Ana Torres and Emily Arlook’s Nomi Segal, the episodes navigate their way through the cast of characters to not only catch fans up on what they missed over summer break, but to also steer them in the direction of this season’s arc.

As far as performances go, Yara Shahidi seems to have found a nice footing for Zoey, a character she has portrayed for a little over five years. Unlike the previous season, she seems more comfortable with being the lead and is more at ease with Zoey’s consistent fourth wall monologues. Chloe & Halle as Jazz and Sky, once again, have some of the best lines and comedic timing in the episodes. Francia and Emily do well with what they are given during the premiere episode, but shine in the second. However, the best scenes of the episode are the ones where all the girls are together. The chemistry within the group truly shines when they are together.

Overall, fans of the series will be happy that Grown-ish is back. In more ways than one, the show relates to a lot of topics college kids face every day during their academic years, but it always adds a dash of comedy to help lighten the mood.
