BB Exclusive: Eline Powell Talks Siren Season 2

Tonight, January 24, Freeform will air the Season 2 premiere of Siren. To get fans prepared for the episode, we sat down with the amazing Eline Powell (Ryn) to talk about the new season.

During our chat, we talked about Ryn’s relationship with Xander this season, the arrival of more mermaids, Ryn possibly taking on more human emotions, and so much more.

What can we expect to see from Ryn this season?
“Ryn this season will go on a bit more of a journey in terms of her identity, mermaid versus human. More mermaids are coming on land and as we met her in Season 1, she decided to make her life on land. In the second season, she begins to form more relationships between those two worlds and then there are some external threats that she does need Ben and Maddie to help her with. Therefore those feelings will inevitably get discussed again, so poor Ryn goes through a lot.”

What will her relationship be like with Xander this season?
“That’s the first thing I asked myself when we left Season 1. With Ryn, because she’s a mermaid, and, as mermaids they’re a little bit more ‘Let’s get on with it, let’s move forward’. Her relationship with Donna didn’t allow her to let go of that for a very long time. With the other mermaids, mainly the ones that joined towards the end of the season, Ryn has seen the damage that holding a grudge does. And to keep going after revenge, the cycle will be continued if someone doesn’t stop with the, ‘You did this and then she did that’. She knows that what is best is to not continue on the fight. But whether she can completely let that go? That is, of course, something you have to tune in for.”

Will we start to see in Season two Ryn pick up more of the human emotion?
“Absolutely! This is such a good question because if it was a normal trajectory I’d say she could learn so much and her human development could become very, very prominent and dominant in her being. Unfortunately, when these new mermaids arrive, her mermaid side really needs to step up in order to fight them and deal with the situation that happens.

That hinders her a little bit, but regardless you’re going to see an increase in, not just her behavior but also her understanding of things. A lot of things will be still new to her and some things that other mermaids might find weird she now finds okay. I don’t know if you’ve seen the clip, but she tries lobster for the first time. In Season 1 I don’t think she would have even found that important or she would have even picked up on that as a relevant emotion.

Now she’s seen the details of things and she’s finding the intricate details in what things mean. Certain actions that humans do, like driving or paying with money, and she’s much more keenly aware of those. In that sense absolutely, we will see a bit of a difference in her. But you know you can’t get the mermaid out of Ryn either. At the end of the day, the human emotion will always be not quite right with her.”

Ryn is such a powerful character, will she keep that same feeling in Season 2?
“To be very honest with you I think about that all the time. Should she be adventurous, should she be this or should she be that? And I’m like ‘Yeah but, surely then you would lose the sense of the character’. It’s very sweet of you to mention that, because I think it’s very important to keep the character and yet feel a bit of the growth there, so let’s hope Season 2 satisfies.”

We know the mermaids are coming, is Ryn going to try to push them to adapt to the human life or is she going try and find a way with Maddie and Ben to get them back to sea?
“I obviously have to say tune in, that’s my official answer! I think both those things will probably be dealt with. Mermaids can’t stay on land too long in the beginning without thinking and being people. That’s common knowledge, I’m not giving anything away. Inevitably that will be a mission they have to deal with. At the end of the day, they have come on land from a threat, there’s a threat in the ocean. There will be a time that they will need help and the closest thing they know to their own world is Ryn.

Ryn is going to need to step up and guide them. For the mermaids, she needs to be a mermaid, yet use her expertise of the human world to help them. It’s a very contingent, trying plan on how she tries to balance those two worlds in that context.”
