BB Exclusive: Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer Answer Our Questions from the 3B Premiere of Shadowhunters

The 3B premiere of Shadowhunters took place tonight, February 25 on Freeform. The premiere contained a lot of information and left us with some burning questions, so we sought out the help of Executive Producers, Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer for some answers.

Izzy and Alec were very much down to business in the premiere episode? How are they dealing with the death of Clary?
Todd: “They’re soldiers. They don’t have the chance to do it in the beginning of the episode. Clary’s going to return sooner than later. They’re going to know she’s alive and Alec and Isabelle have propelled into a cool story about the Clave. It’s political, full of intrigue, and connected to the prison escape, as well. But it’s a deeper, deeper through line and it’s cool it involves our other characters. But they’re grieving in their own way, and I know we don’t unpack it as much as we do because they’re so concerned about Jace.

Here their brother is in such a self-destructive death wish mode, and they’ve got to fix that before anything. They have to deal with their jobs and stuff, and they don’t have a chance. We do consider them soldiers and we always talk about Shadowhunters that way, and emotions cloud judgment, and all that stuff. Jace is too far gone, he can’t compose himself, but the two of them remember that motto.”

The episode ends with a big reveal regarding the connection now between Clary and Jonathan. Can you explain how that’s going to come into effect for the rest of the season?
Todd: “Their bond is something that Lilith had created but it’s also the bond of their blood. As much as the show is about family, we see how your family ties are difficult things to break even when sometimes it’s the best thing to do. She’ll be tied to him for a little bit of time here.”
