REVIEW: The Grown-ish Season 2B Premiere Doesn’t Hold Anything Back
Grown-ish returns tonight, June 5, for its 2B season and not everything is sunshine and roses for our favorite characters. In the 2A finale, Dre (Anthony Anderson) cuts Zoey (Yara Shahidi) off after he learns she has fallen way behind on her classes and is facing possible expulsion. This premiere picks up immediately after the finale and that bombshell isn’t the only one that will shake Zoey’s world. After a run in with Aaron (Trevor Jackson), Zoey will have to face the realization Aaron and Ana (Francia Raisa) are more than just friends.
This first episode back focuses on girl code, whether or not it’s okay to have feelings for a friend’s ex and what determines if someone is an ex or not. Each friend has a different opinion which leads to quite a bit of conflict for the entire friendship group. Grown-ish does well to share the opinions of the women and the men on these divisive topics. The show does a great job allowing everyone to share their own opinion on the different subjects which creates fun conversations between the characters.
The highlights of this episode are the scenes with Diggy Simmons and Jordan Buhat. The two provide some much-needed laughs in an overall serious episode. I am hopeful this season will continue to explore their friendship as it is one of the best parts of the show. Emily Arlook’s Nomi is also rather enjoyable in this episode as she helps to center the women during the ongoing situation. However, she definitely seems to be facing her own form of conflict as the 2b season progresses.
Grown-ish Season 2B is not holding back in the first episode and I’m excited to see where they take these next 10 episodes. One of the many wonderful parts of this show is it doesn’t stray from any topic. Some of the characters’ reactions to these topics may seem out of this world, fans still can’t help but relate to at least one of the topics being discussed, especially in this episode. Zoey is facing a lot of reality checks this season, hopefully she is able to turn some things in to positives before the season is over.
Make sure to check out the premiere tonight on Freeform and let us know what you think.
