Marvel Announces Next Phase at SDCC

It was a big night in Hall H tonight, July 20 at San Diego Comic Con. Marvel, who missed out on last year’s show, come back with a bang as they revealed to fans their plans for the next two years.

Black Widow will kick off the new phase in the Marvel Cinematic Universe when it is released on May 1, 2020/ Scarlett Johansson will reprise her role of Natasha Romanoff in the movie and star alongside David Harbour as Alexei aka The Red Guardian, Florence Pugh as Yelena, O-T Fagbenle as Mason and Rachel Weisz as Melina.

Next up will be the new Disney+ series, The Falcon and Winter Solider. Being released in the Fall of 2020, Sam Wilson aka The Falcon and Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier will team up to fight together against evil after the events of “Avengers: Endgame.” Anthony Mackie (The Falcon) and Sebastian Stan (The Winter Soldier) Daniel Brühl will also return in the series as the villain, Baron Zemo.

Marvel Studios’ President, Kevin Feige, who made the announcements at the Con, then introduced the entire cast of their new movie, The Eternals. Directed by Chloé Zhao, Richard Madden is set to play Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Don Lee as Gilgamesh and Angelina Jolie as Thena.

Then Feige confirmed the casting of Simu Liu as Shang-Chi who was in attendance for the announcement, as was the director, Destin Daniel Cretton. It was also revealed that Awkwafina was cast in a yet-to-be-disclosed role and the real Mandarin would be played by Tony Leung. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be in theaters on February 12, 2021.

Disney+ is then ramping up in the Spring of 2021 with the release of two new shows, WandaVision and Loki. Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, will focus on what happened to Loki after he took the Space Stone in Avengers: Endgame.

WandaVision, however, which feature the return of Paul Bettany as Vision and Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. Teyonah Parris will be joining the duo playing the grown-up version of Monica Rambeau, who was introduced to audiences in Captain Marvel.

The WandaVision series will directly lead into Marvel’s next movie, due out on May 7, 2021, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Directed by Scott Derrickson, the movie will feature the return of Benedict Cumberbatch and also star Elizabeth.

Feige then talked about the first animated series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, What If…?. Being created exclusively for Disney+, many actors from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe will reprise their roles as voice talent in the series. Jeffrey Wright will also be joining the cast to voice The Watcher in the new series. That movie will be released in the Summer of 2021.

Jeremy Renner also was on hand to talk about his new Disney+ series, Hawkeye. Due out in the Fall of 2021, the series will introduce Kate Bishop and apparently take place during Hawkeye’s time as Ronan.

On November 5, 2021, Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson will return for the fourth movie in Thor franchise, Thor: Love and Thunder. In surprising news, it was announced that Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman, will become the Mighty Thor, the goddess of Thunder in the new movie.

Last but not least, Feige introduced Mahershala Ali to the stage where he announced announced the new Marvel Studios feature film Blade that Ali will star in.

I am so excited to for all of these titles! I also love that they are going to keep Elizabeth in the movie universe!
