REVIEW: The Addams Family is Great Movie to See This Halloween Season
Since 1938, The Addams Family has been the kookiest family around. A wealthy aristocratic family, the Addams’ love all things gruesome. From their appearances to the pranks they pull on each other, spooky is the theme. It’s no wonder many find the family to be a little bizarre. For years, fans of all ages have welcomed the Addams family into their homes. Now they have the chance to love a new edition of the family with the release of MGM’s animated movie, The Addams Family.
Featuring the voices of Oscar Issac, Charlize Theron, Chloe Grace Moretz, Finn Wolfhard, Bette Midler, Allison Janney, Nick Kroll and Snoop Dogg, this new version finds the Addams Family living in isolation after Gomez (Issac) and Morticia (Theron) are run out of town for being different. The family begins preparing for their relatives to come visit to celebrate Pugsley’s (Wolfhard) sword macabre. Outside the family home, there are weird issues stirring up in town. Shady TV personality Margaret Needler (Janney) is revamping the town and adamant to sell each homes, no matter the cost. She soon realizes the Addams’ hilltop home is standing in the way of her big dreams and sets out to destroy the home and the family.
Issac and Theron are great as Gomez and Morticia, especially Issac. He brings so much life to the character while Theron’s sultry take on Morticia is fun to hear alongside Issac’s jaunty Gomez. Moretz voices the Addams’ oldest child, Wednesday, and does a great job bringing the classic bored Wednesday tone to the character. There were some parts that I had wished she would have evoked just a tad bit of emotion, but this is Wednesday and Moretz’s take on the character showed off just how nonchalant this character is. Wolfhard also did a nice job as the Addams’ youngest son, Pugsley. I would have liked to have seen more scenes between he and Moretz because Pugsley and Wednesday’s relationship always made me laugh, there are too few scenes between them.
The standouts in this movie are easily Bette Milder as Grandma and Janney as Margaret Needler. These two were so much fun to see their characters brought to life, especially Janney’s Needler. Janney’s ability to play nice at some parts and nasty at others was really entertaining to see on screen.
The Addams Family is filled with great music, funny moments, and destruction galore. The movie isn’t as great as some of its predecessors, but it is a nice addition to The Addams Family legacy. Plus, it isn’t scary, so it is a great movie to see with the family this Halloween season. If you are looking for a Halloween movie that won’t give you nightmares, see this!
