REVIEW: The Witches Delivers A Spooky Treat For All Ages
HBO Max has spooky fun in store with the release of The Witches. Based on the children’s novel by Roald Dahl. This new re-imagining kicks off with Hero Boy recounting the story of his encounter with a real life coven of witches and. He shares how, with the help of a few little friends and his Grandma, he was able to overcome the Grand High Witch’s devious plan to eradicate children.
Director, Robert Zemeckis, and screenwriter, Kenya Barris, were not tasked with an easy adaptation, especially because a film adaptation of the beloved novel was previously done in 1990 with the amazing Anjelica Huston taking on the role of the Grand High Witch. Zemeckis and Barris were able to bring to life these fantastical and well-known characters into a world that felt fresh and new. The minor changes made, such as a new location of the hotel, flowed well with the narrative of the story and helped put their own spin on the tale.
The film does have a few slow moments, notably when the main protagonist becomes “mousefied”. The flair and pizazz take a backseat for a slower and less enjoyable ride. It is the strength of the cast that prevents the film from going off course.
Anne Hathaway takes the stage at the villainous, Grand High Witch and she tackles the character as though she was meant to play the wicked she-demon all her life. Hathaway brings the right amount of over-the-top flamboyant behavior mixed with a serious side of spooky to this wicked creature that will leave the littles ones in terror and the adults in stitches.
Octavia Spencer is, as always, a true delight onscreen. Her portrayal of Grandma and the film’s resident voodoo healer/witch connoisseur is pitch perfect. She is someone who would give you the shirt off her back in a time of need, but also give you a swift kick if you step out of line.
Much applause needs to go to newcomer, Jahzir BrunoIs, as he takes on the role of the film’s protagonist, Hero Boy. He is a charming, engaging addition to a very talented cast. Chris Rock lends his voice as the flick’s narrator, Older Hero Boy and is classic Chris Rock.
The Witches is a creepy family tale that will delight all fans this spooky season. Whether you are a fan of the book or the 1990s film, this new HBO Max creation has something for everyone.
The Witches debuts tomorrow, October 22, on HBO Max.
