EXCLUSIVE: Creator Darren Star Talks the Final Season of Younger

Younger creator, Darren Star sat down and chatted about the final season of his hit show. The show aired its final season on Paramount+ today, April 15.

During the interview, Star talked the final season, Liza’s journey, what he will miss the most about the show, and so much more. Check out the interview below.

Tell us about the final season:
“I think all these characters have been on a long journey together for six seasons, but I think the seventh season really brings it home. And I think they all have very satisfying storylines this season, that are unexpected but with a lot of growth, for all the characters on the show. And I think what was really important for us, for the writers, to really tell everybody’s stories, and we had a lot of story to tell for our cast. And I think that, until the very end of the final episode, there are twists and turns all the way through the very end of the episode 12, that final episode, that actually is an hour long show.”

What will you miss most about the show?
“Working with this fantastic group of writers, incredibly talented cast, we’ve all really grown close over all these years. I think that we’re going to miss being together all the time. And I think we’ve grown accustomed to seeing each other every season, and looking forward to that, and I’m certainly going to miss seeing everybody. I think people really respond to any character that is looking to reinvent their lives in a positive way.”

What will Liza go through this season?
“Liza [Sutton Foster] really challenges herself, even though she does it in a very unconventional, sometimes unethical way. But you understand why she’s doing this. I feel like the audience roots for this character to succeed in work and in love, and that I think we can all relate to a character who doesn’t want to be defined by her age, and is pushing through her limitations.”

What about Liza’s journey throughout the series?
“For Liza, her journey, as much as romance has been introduced into the series over the years, she wanted to succeed in work. And I think that’s what we thought about. For me that is Liza’s ultimate win, is being successful at work. She achieved something by the end of the series, at work, that’s way beyond what she could have hoped. And I think she does it in a way that definitely comes at a cost, there are sacrifices along the way. But she really has a very satisfying, I think, end to her journey, because she really got what she set out to do.”

What about the other characters?
“I think for the other characters, sometimes because of Liza and their involvement with Liza, they’ve found a lot of growth and inspiration from her. And I think they all have, from Charles, to Kelsey, to Josh, to Maggie, they really have broadened their idea of what their lives can be. But I think that’s Liza’s journey, and what she did very much has inspired all the characters around her.”
