EXCLUSIVE: Brett Gelman Talks Playing the Villain in Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse
In a little less than 24 hours, Amazon Prime Video will release their new movie, Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse. Directed by Stefano Sollima, to celebrate the upcoming release Brett Gelman opened up about his time working on the movie, playing the villain, and so much more. Check out what he had to say below.
On movies skipping theaters and going straight to platforms like Amazon Prime Video:
‘As we come out of this [the pandemic], that community will lend itself, hopefully, to the theater and being out. And what we’ve learned while we’ve been locked in will then continue on in a fuller way when we can be around each other in a safe way again. Also it will get everybody more excited about movies, you know? I just think it’s been great to see the excitement around this film. And that like Stefano [Sollima] said, ‘It is this gift’, this treat that we’re giving people in the midst of all of this horrible year.”
On joining the movie:
“I’ve played some not so great guys in the past. But this was really kicking it to a whole other level of evil and sickness. And really, the chance to work with Michael [B. Jordan] was a huge. It’s like, ‘You want to do this with Michael B. Jordan?’ ‘Yeah, Absolutely’. Then also Stefano, again the chance to work with him. I was such huge fans of both of these guys’ work. So it was a no brainer. And not too shabby to go to Berlin either. It’s a great city.”

On his character Victor Rykov:
“He’s really interesting to me because, without giving anything away, this is a movie where everybody has a very distinct code. It’s really about willing to die for that code no matter what that code is, and really believing that that’s your whole belief system. That’s your whole mentality. So to really get into that with this character was just so fascinating to me. Because a lot of the times the bad behavior, from past characters of mine, it came out of like a desperation or a deep loneliness. And, that’s not like that with this guy. It was from a deep belief system.
On why he is a great villain:
“Without giving it away, he’s a great villain because you’d not only experience his villainy, but then you ask who the true villain actually is. Even in the heroes, I think it’s just a beautiful movie of complicated people. And that’s, again, why Stefano brought that out so much. Like he said, he’s not judging any characters. He’s just letting us exist. So there is the bad and the good guys and the good and the bad guys in a way. Not the good in terms of my character, but at least some sort of humanity there that as twisted as it is, I hope you can see.
On being in this action movie:
“It was just amazing. And then also just getting to work. I mean really to be a villain in an amazing action movie. That’s like one of those childhood dream things, you know? I’m very grateful to be a part of it and to have worked with Michael and Stefano on this.
On the stunts:
“I had never done anything like that intense before. I got to say it was like a real sense of accomplishment. At the end of every take, like Mike we’d hug and laugh.”
