REVIEW: The Get Together is an Unexpected Good Time

Broken into three parts, The Get Together follows four different twenty-somethings, August (Courtney Parchman), Caleb (Alejandro Rose-Garcia aka Shakey Graves), Damien (Jacob Artist) and Betsy (Johanna Braddy), whose lives, and problems, all intertwine one Friday night at a local party in Austin, Texas. August is a recent college grad struggling to fit into her new hometown while her best friend, McCall (Luxy Banner) is the complete opposite. She has taken to the new city and is completely thriving. Caleb is a struggling musician who comes face to face with the “one who got away” one night on the town, while Damian and Besty are back in Betsy’s hometown to visit family. There Damian’s plans to propose to Betsy, but ends up trying to save his derailed proposal.

At first I was very unsure about the film being broken into three separate parts. Typically, when stories are broken into parts, the parts become too drawn out, hard to follow, and boring. With The Get Together, it was the complete opposite. Writers, Will Bakke and Michael B. Allen, easily found a way to make sure each part was just long enough for viewers to understood who the characters were and what each of them were trying to achieve. Viewers never at any point lose track of characters or their stories. Everything is intertwined and sealed with a perfect bow at the end. Also, the writers did a wonderful job of creating characters that were a extremely relatable. From August’s anxiety over stepping out of her comfort zone to Betsy constant second guessing ever decision she has ever made, viewers will be able to find at lease one way that they relate to these characters and their experiences.

Parchman’s August started off as my least favorite character, but by the end she became my favorite. The newcomer had great comedic timing and really good chemistry with everyone she comes in contact with. Rose-Garcia’s is enjoyable as Caleb and his scenes with Parchman are some of my favorite. Braddy and Artist are not new to the acting scene as they both starred in popular television series’, Quantico (Braddy) and Glee (Artist) respectively, but Parchman and Rose-Garcia are the clear standouts in this film.

The Get Together, at first glance, may not seem like a film worth watching, but it most definitely is. The film has a simple storyline that captivates you and keeps you entertained from start to finish. I highly recommend checking out this movie on On Demand tomorrow, May 14.
