Advance Preview: Marvel’s Loki Returns A Fan-Favorite For Some Time Mischief
The God of Mischief has returned and this time he is leading his own show. Marvel’s Loki finds the son of Odin immediately after his escape with the Tesseract from New York City in 2012. Just when Loki believes he is home free, he is captured by the Time Variance Authority, aka the TVA. It is the TVA’s job to make sure the timeline stays intact and that no variant, like Loki, disrupts things with his schemes.
The first episode of the series is merely a stepping stone on Loki’s journey. The premiere’s only purpose is to explain the TVA, introduce some of the new characters, and lay the groundwork for the overall storyline. You will want to pay attention to this episode or be prepared to re-watch. There is a ton of information revealed in the span of 45 minutes that will not only set up the series, but also begin shedding some light on Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The second episode is when things begin to ramp up; the action kicks in, more characters are introduced, and the viewers begin to understand a bit more about the show’s villain. The best part of the episode is the developing relationship between Morbius (Owen Wilson) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston). Their banter may just be in the same league as Bucky and Sam’s.
What makes this series so interesting so far is that viewers are revisiting key moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Loki discovers them for the first time. It’s a clever way to look back on Marvel history without feeling repetitive. It is also a great way to showcase a different perspective and see how one blip in the timeline could be the catalyst of several issues. It makes for very good storytelling, but also highlights the importance those events had, and will have, on Phase 4.
Tom Hiddleston returns as Loki and is just as wickedly wonderful as before. He is joined by Owen Wilson as Agent Mobius and fans are definitely in for a treat with these two. Hiddleston’s impeccable comedic timing paired with Wilson’s snarkiness makes for a delightful pairing. Viewers will have fun watching these two battle it out this season. Gugu Mbath-Raw (Judge Renslayer) and Wunmi Mosaku (Hunter B-15) are introduced in the first episode, Mbath-Raw receives more screen time in the second episode. Her performance as Renslayer is a breath of fresh air and watching her keep pace with Wilson is great. As for Mosaku, one can only assume we will learn more about her character as the series progresses.
If the focus of The Falcon And The Winter Soldier and WandaVision was to develop and grow characters, Loki is all about cluing viewers in on what’s to come in Phase Four. The story is unique and will have viewers theorizing on the future of Marvel until each new episode is revealed, especially after the end of episode 2.
