ADVANCE REVIEW: Short, Martin, & Gomez Make for Quite the Trio in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building
What would you do if a murder took place in your building? Would you be scared? Would you push it off as a one-time thing and move on? Or, would you begin an investigation in hopes of starting a true crime podcast? If you answered yes to the last question then Hulu’s new series, Only Murders in the Building is the show for you.
True crime lovers, former hit TV actor, Charles (Steve Martin), theatrical director, Oliver (Martin Short), and artist, Mabel (Selena Gomez) band together to try and track down the murderer in their luxury New York City condo building. The trio hope this will help launch their own true crime podcast, much like the true crime podcast that brought them all together. They find this easier said than done, especially when they each have secrets of their own, one of which may just be the lead needed to expose who the killed their fellow tenant.
Friends for years, Martin and Short reunite for this new Hulu series and it’s like no time has past. The two’s chemistry not only comes naturally to them, but will leave you wanting to be included in Charles and Oliver’s friend group. Their characters are hilarious and their scenes are some of the best in the series. Selena Gomez joins the trio and, while does not have the same comedic chops as the veterans, she does well to hold her own and have her own shining moments. Gomez’s Mabel brings a younger appeal to the show and her character easily mixes in with Short and Martin.
The show also features a slew of guest stars including Sting, Tina Fey, and Nathan Lane. The characters aren’t in it much, but their appearances are added bonus. Their interactions with our main three are fun and feature some pretty great moments.
Only Murders in the Building keeps a good pace throughout each episode. The episodes focus on the overall story, the murder in the building, while also introducing side stories that are not only intriguing, but also not distracting. You learn just enough about each character through these side stories that will leave you wanting to come back for more. This may be the first show that I’m happy to wait the week for each new release.
Hulu has a win with this series. With likeable characters, an interesting story, and some great twists, fans will find it hard not to find something to like about this show.
