ADVANCE REVIEW: Fans of Superman & Lois Will Not Be Disappointed with Season 2 Premiere
Superman & Lois returns for its Season 2 premiere tonight, January 11, and, though it had some nonsensical parts, it still proves to be one of the best shows on the CW.
The premiere picks up months after the finale and wastes no time jumping into the action. The episode introduces a number of storylines, in a small amount of time, but never confuses the audience while doing so. It easily lays the groundwork for what’s to come for Clark (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois (Elizabeth Tulloch), Jordan (Alex Garfin) and Sarah (Inde Navarrette), as well as some other characters. The only character I felt the episode didn’t lay the groundwork for was Jonathan (Jordan Elsass), but I have faith. Showrunner Todd Helbing didn’t let me down in the first season, so I’m hoping he doesn’t let me down when it comes to Jonathan this season.
In the premiere, we are introduced to two new characters. First up with Hoechlin’s former Teen Wolf costar, Ian Bohen as Lt. Mitch Anderson. From the second he is introduced I fell in love with him. The back and forth between Bohen and Hoechlin was so well done, as it should have been, in this episode that it will only leave fans begging to see more of these types of face offs between Superman and Anderson.
However, I am unsure how I feel about Season 2’s other new character, Natalie Irons (Tayler Buck). The character completely threw off the vibe of the episode, and in my opinion, could of been left out of the entire episode and nothing would of changed. Even with these thoughts, I am holding out hope that the character gets better as the season progresses because she could create some great moment for Lois and her family.
Hoechlin, Tulloch, Garfin, and Elsass are just as wonderful in the premiere as they were in the first season. Tulloch is particularly great in this episode. Some may not enjoy how Lois is acting in the episode, but you are going to be blown away by Tulloch’s performance. Hoechlin is charming as ever in this premiere. His ability to bounce between playing the oblivious Clark in one scene to the calm and cool Superman in another is so much fun to watch in this episode.
Fans of Superman & Lois Season 1 are not going to want to miss this premiere. It features everything fans loved from the first season, plus it beautifully sets up what’s to come this season with a very nice cliffhanger, so don’t turn off your TV until the credits air. Hopefully, the series continues this trajectory for the rest of the season.
