ADVANCE REVIEW: Superman & Lois “Tried & True” May Be the Best Episode of the Season

Directed by Amy Jo Johnson (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Felicity) episode six “Tried and True”, is an emotional gut punch from start to finish. This is not an episode you are going to want to miss a minute of. Filled with A+ performances and a ton of story development, this may be the best episode of the season so far.

The episode picks up with Superman’s (Tyler Hoechlin) quest to get to the bottom of why Bizzaro is in Smallville and Superman’s ongoing battle with Lieutenant Mitchell (Ian Bohen). Hoechlin and Bohen continue to amaze me with the ease they have around one another. There scenes have been some of my favorite this season and they only get better in this episode. However, their storyline sort of takes a backseat though to the other storylines that have been unfolding this season. Lana (Emmanuelle Chriqui) is still reeling from the ramifications that revealed themselves during Sarah’s (Inde Navarrette) quinceañera last episode and Emmanuelle’s performance will leave your heart wrenching. She knocks it out of the park in this episode. She also has a great scene with Hoechlin that I think fans are really going to enjoy.

While all this is going on, we also delve more into Jonathan’s (Jordan Elsass) new extracurricular activity and how it is affecting him and those closest to him. Elsass continues to impress me with his portrayal of Johnathan. And, when you add in Alex Garfin’s you are guaranteed a great scene. The chemistry between these two has an extremely natural feel that only gets better with each episode. We also get the re-introduction of Lucy Lang 9Jenna Dewan), so you can see why you can’t miss a moment. This is one storyline I wish we got to spend more time on. Tulloch and Dewan are wonderful together, so here’s hoping we get to see more from Dewan as the series progresses.

Director Amy Jo Johnson brings a fun new look to the series with her episode. The story played out like a movie that requires a much-needed sequel. From the opening sequence, you are taken on a non-stop rollercoaster ride you won’t want to get off of. But, if you must get off, make sure to get back on before the final 15 minutes. Those final minutes will leave shaking your fist and begging for next week’s episode.
