HBO Max Delivers A Fun Wholesome Comedy With Gordita Chronicles

HBO Max debuted their newest comedy series, Gordita Chronicles, earlier today, June 23. This new series follows a young girl named Cucu Castelli, also known as “Gordita”, and her family as they chase the American dream in Miami in 1985. However, like most stories, the American dream is not paved with gold, and the family of four must learn to adapt to the American way while also staying true to their Latin culture.

Gordita Chronicles, created and executive produced by Claudia Forestier, is a perfectly wholesome series, sprinkled with 1980s nostalgia. Yes, there are a few scenes throughout the series that might be a little too mature for younger audiences, but families will have a hard time not falling in love with Castelli and the antics they find themselves in while trying to adjust to the American way of life. There is something truly relatable about this family and the series does a wonderful job balancing the stories of the family members so that the audience never feels lost or unconnected. However, there are moments throughout the series when lines fall flat or stories don’t fully pan out, but the those are far and few between.

Olivia Goncalves steps as young go-getter Cucu Castelli, and she is quite a talented little actor. Savannah Nicole Ruiz plays the role of Cucu’s older sister, Emilia, and the chemistry between the pair is wonderful thing to watch. Juan Javier Cardenas and Diana Maria Riva play Cucu’s parents, Victor and Adela, and these two might just be one of the best parts of the show. They have amazing comedic timing and the chemistry they share with the girls and themselves is an absolute joy.

Gordita Chronicles is a great feel good comedy that doesn’t involve a lot of thinking. It’s a perfect show to turn on if you are looking to tune out and just laugh. If you have HBO Max, I strongly suggest checking this show out.
