EXCLUSIVE: Mckenna Grace Dishes on her New Single “Post Party Trauma”
Mckenna Grace just dropped her brand new single, “Post Party Trauma” this past Friday, July 8. The new single is the third single to be released by the Ghostbusters: Afterlife star.
We got the chance to sit down and chat with the singer/actress about her new song, if she has an EP coming, being honest in her music, and so much more. Check out what she had to say below.
Let’s talk your new single, “Post Party Trauma”! Can you tell me about your new single ?
“It’s a really personal song about feeling anxious and like a loser at parties, that’s definitely how I have been feeling most of the time when I’ve been going out to parties.”
What was the inspiration behind the song?
“I made the song after I went to a couple of parties and just felt like the biggest loser, I showed up at one of them and there were people dressed so fancy and beautiful and I was wearing my Taylor Swift cardigan and a massive lime green slimer purse. I was really embarrassed and just felt stupid.”
How does this single compare to the other singles you have released?
“I think this single is pretty different for me because I feel like it’s really personal mental health wise, which I did give a bit of with my song do all my friends hate me, but I don’t know, this song just feels different to me and I’m really happy that I got to be able to release it.”
Is there a full-length album in the works or are just having fun right now releasing singles?
“I have like 30 songs written and produced. I’m trying to figure out what I would put on an EP, when I would release an EP, and that kind of stuff. It’s been a strange journey figuring myself out as an artist and at the same time as a person, so my music has been all over the place depending on the day. I do have my next couple of singles lined up and picked out.”
You recently posted on Instagram that you try to be honest in your music, what would you say has been the hardest part of being honest in your music?
“It’s been a really interesting experience for me being so honest in my music because as an actor, I can hide behind a script or a character. With the music I’ve been releasing, I’m writing it. It’s my script, it’s my innermost crazy, sad, dramatic, more vulnerable parts of me- so I’m also having to kind of be honest with myself and that can be scary too.”
As you release your music, what would you say you have learned about yourself and your music?
“It’s really nice to be able to discover myself through music but also really figure out who I am and who I want to be while writing music. I’m a pretty emotional person, so one big thing I learned is that emotions come and go and I wanted to be less reactive in real life.”
How do you balance your music life with your acting life?
“It’s a weird balance because one day I’ll be on set and then the next I’ll go straight to a writing session in a studio and it’s two insanely different worlds in my opinion. When I first started off, I thought they would be really similar, but I was totally wrong! I really like filming in Toronto because on my days off I’ll go and meet with my favorite producers and writers. I love the Toronto music scene!”
What are you hoping fans get from “Post Party Trauma”?
“I hope that people will understand that I’m not trying to feed into all of the sadness and darkness in the world right now, I’m just trying to release a very honest song to help people feel less alone. I hope people will be able to listen to this song, maybe cry a bit, or scream (the bridge is my favorite!) but then get back up and move forward. I hope my music can be an outlet for people to help get their emotions out.”
