Batgirl Not To Be Released In Theaters Or HBO Max
It looks like dark days are ahead for Batgirl. The upcoming DC Comics’ adaptation, which stars Leslie Grace, Michael Keaton, and J.K. Simmons, is apparently being shelved by Warner Bros. Discovery, even though it is nearly completed.
According to The Wrap, “the film, made under a previous regime, was initially designed to be an HBO Max release, and then was being considered for theatrical distribution. Due to COVID issues and shutdowns, the budget ballooned to $90 million.”
The site goes on to say, “The leaders of the studio determined ultimately in spite of reshoots and increased budget, did not work, according to insiders. The new owners and management are committed to making DC titles big theatrical event films, and ‘Batgirl’ isn’t that. Insiders add that studio brass loves the film’s directors and star, and are actively planning to work with them soon.”
No other confirmation has been announced, but if this is indeed true, this is extremely disappointing and it says a lot about WB Discovery’s faith in female superheroes. I’m not trying to overthink it, but I feel like they really canned it for one of two reasons. 1. With everything surrounding Ezra Miller and The Flash, that movie may have to be reworked causing the writers to remove Michael Keaton’s role all together. Which would mean there would be no connection between Batgirl and the current DC Universe. 2. They didn’t believe the character Batgirl would bring enough draw to the theater so they canned it.
Either way, I want this movie to be released. Too much work went into it, and the cast was too good for it not to see the light of day.
