REVIEW: Zoey Deutch Continues to Prove She’s a Rom-Com Queen in Something from Tiffany’s
The Holiday season has come to New York City in the Prime Video Holiday romantic comedy, Something from Tiffany’s. Based on the novel of the same name by Melissa Hill, the film opens days before Christmas as Gary (Ray Nicholson and Ethan (Kendrick Sampson) head into Tiffany’s to find the perfect blue box gift for their girlfriends. Ethan is looking for the perfect engagement ring for his Vanessa (Shay Mitchell) while Gary is not ready to commit to his Rachel (Zoey Deutch) so he is looking for something simple yet beautiful. All seems right as they head out of the store with their perfect gifts in hand until Gary is sideswiped by a car and the two end up with each other’s blue boxes. Now, Ethan will do anything to get his engagement ring back, including befriending Rachel. When sparks begin to fly between Rachel and Ethan, the couples must ask themselves if they are indeed each other’s happy endings or are they just settling.
Though the movie is set during the Holiday season the Holidays don’t play a major player in the story. Instead, the focus is solely on the relationships between Ethan and Vanessa and Gary and Rachel. The contrasting relationships are a joy to watch as the pairs attempt to navigate the twists and turns being thrown their ways. However, it would have been nice to see the Holidays play a bigger part.
Deutch steals the show in this movie. Deutch plays Rachel in such a charming manner that you will leave the movie wishing you could pop in for a conversation with Rachel at her restaurant or enjoy a cup of coffee with her at her bake shop. No newbie to the rom-com scene, starring in the hit Netflix movie, Set It Up with Glen Powell, her chemistry with Sampson is fantastic. Here’s hoping we get more rom-coms from her in the near future. Sampson is just as wonderful as Deutch. His character is extremely endearing and he was the perfect choice to lead this movie alongside Deutch.
Nicholson and Mitchell are great adversaries to Ethan and Rachel, but don’t be alarmed when you end up liking Mitchell’s Vanessa. Nicholson easily comes off as the villain in this story, but it is hard not to sympathize with Mitchell’s Vanessa. It might be because Mitchell is quite enjoyable in the role, or it might be because the character was just dealt a bad hand. Leah Jeffries (Daisy), Jojo T. Gibbs (Terri), Javicia Leslie (Sophia) round out the cast as the moral supports to Rachel and Ethan. Each character helps open the eyes of our leading characters and make them realize a few things not only about their relationships, but themselves as well.
If you are looking for a straight up Holiday rom-com this Holiday season, this movie will let you down. But if you are looking for a great rom-com filled with fantastic leads and a fun story Something from Tiffany’s is for you. It’s the perfect movie to turn on while decorating for the Holidays or if you are just looking for something to put you in a feel-good mood.
