REVIEW: BB Previews AMC’s Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe SDCC Experience
AMC brought Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe to San Diego Comic Con with their brand new immersive Immortal Universe SDCC Experience. Located at the Hilton San Diego Gaslamp Quarter Hotel terrace, BB was treated to an exclusive preview of the new experience, which will open to the public tomorrow, July 20.
The experience is set in New Orleans on “The Street of Immortality,”. However, before we could reach “The Street of Immortality” portion of the experience, we were given the chance to earn our own immortality. In a dark room at the beginning of the experience, actors informed us, and the other attendees, about a little thing called immortality. As the actors told us the ins and outs of the concoction, waiters and waitresses passed around shots of “The Elixir of Immortality”. The staff tried their best to get everyone in the room a shot of this mocktail, but it didn’t quite make it to everyone in our group, so make sure to keep an eye out for it if you plan to take part this weekend.
After we took our shot, we were rushed out of the room onto “The Street of Immortality”. The street is filled with a load of photo opportunities, characters actors, and a mission to collect three different souvenirs. The mission isn’t exactly clear, but fans of the show, Interview With a Vampire, will love the souvenirs handed out as they make there way long the street, and the locations they pass along the way.
At the end of the street, before we exited, we were treated to a bag of beignets and a one last goodie. Overall, the experience was good, but not great. The mission we were asked to be a part of didn’t exactly make sense, so we were a bit confused by the point of the experience. But, the detail that went into creating the experience was what made the experience worth it. From the costumes to the jazz music, to the set design, you couldn’t help but feel like you were transported out of San Diego and to the streets of New Orleans.
It will be interesting though to see how they move people through the experience this weekend. Once we made it out of the room at the beginning, no one was there ushering us through the experience. Hopefully they have a plan in place. If not, fans are going to be waiting a very long time before they can access “The Street of Immortality”.
The experience is open Thursday, July 20, Friday, July 21 and Saturday, July 22 from 11am – 7pm. The event is free and open to all ages. Daily admission is limited, so if you are adamant about checking it out, I suggest getting there bright and early if you want to try it out.
