REVIEW: We Were the Lucky Ones Shows The Lengths A Family With Go To Survive

Hulu debuts its new limited series, We Were the Lucky Ones, today, March 28. Based on the novel by Georgia Hunter, this new series follows the Kurc family during World War II, and their determination to survive the war and reunite their family.

I was lucky enough to watch the limited series in its entirety and the series is deeply heart-wrenching, but perfectly depicts a family’s love and determination to survive. This isn’t some fictionalized family, the Kurc Family is based on Hunter’s own family, and their personal experiences during the tumultuous time. It’s this personal connection that pulls the viewers in and bonds them to this family. You feel at home with the Kurc family, which makes the events they suffer through that more heartbreaking and painful.

This bond is further strengthened through the amazing cast. Leading the cast is Joey King and Logan Lerman as Halina and Addy Kurc, and along for the journey are Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Moran Rosenblatt, Hadas Yaron, Michael Aloni, Amit Rahav, Robin Weigert, and Lior Ashkenazi, who round out the Kurc Family. The chemistry between these actors is outstanding. Viewers will be able to tell throughout the series that there was a comfortability between these actors which allowed for complete strangers to become a believable family.

The series can be a bit difficult to follow at points due to the shifting character point of views. One second viewers are focusing on Halina and then the next viewers are quickly transitioned to Addy’s story, then off to another member of the family’s story; all in one episode. It’s a lot to remember episode after episode, and it does lead to some rushed plotlines, but even with this every shifting momentum, the series is worth watching.

We Were The Lucky Ones is a poignant look at the strength of a family during one of the darkest events of humankind. The series is gut wrenching, but again, the strength of this family to survive and reunite will leave a lasting impression on all who watch.
