Advance Preview: Season Two Of My Adventures With Superman Continues To Soar
My Adventures With Superman returns to the small screen this weekend on Adult Swim. The hit animated series from Jake Wyatt follows a younger Clark Kent (voiced by Jack Quaid) as he learns about his Kryptonian heritage and he navigates his new life as Superman, alongside his girlfriend, Louis Lane (Alice Lee) and and his best friend, Jimmy Olsen (Ishmel Sahid). Season Two kicks off right after the events of season one with Jimmy living the highlife after selling his social media account, Flamebird, to The Daily Planet. Lois and Clark, on the other hand, are trying to balance their new relationship with the never-ending saga of villains and beats for The Daily Planet. However, the trio find themselves at odds when Clark finds out that their is another Kryptonian alive, and living somewhere on Earth.
With only two twenty minute episodes made available to press, it was hard to get an understanding of what to expect from this season. Viewers will be able to tell right from the get go that things won’t be easy for Clark and Lois, especially with potential arrival of Clark’s cousin, Kara. Add in the fact that Amanda Waller (voiced by Debra Wilson) and Task Force X will stop at nothing to put an end to Superman, and things are going great for the pair. But, rather than focus on the two working as a team to battle these obstacles, the writers have decided the pair needs to be at odds with one another. It all seems a little too cliche.
Lois also comes off extremely needy in the first two episdoes. Season 1 did a nice job establishing her as a confident, will do whatever it takes type of character, but the first two episodes of Season 2 begins to undo all that hardwork. I’m hoping this trend doesn’t continue as we get further along into the season, as her depiction in Season 1 was one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. Jimmy’s story, on the otherhand, will be an interesting one. He spends a majority of the first two episodes wasting his newly earned millions on outlandish things and not having a care in the world about Flamebird. His story doesn’t quite fit the overall storyline, so it will be interesting to see what direction the writers choose to take his character this season.
What will be even more interesting is how they choose to depict the dynamic between the trio. One of the best parts about season one was the friendship between Lois, Clark, and Jimmy. Now with Lois and Clark dating, and Jimmy doing Jimmy things, how do they remain the trio everyone loved from season one. The writers have their worked cut out for them because if the first two episodes are anything to go off of, the trio’s friendship is put on the backburner.
Season two of My Adventures With Superman debuts on Adult Swim on May 25.
