The British Embassy Welcomes ‘Wicked’ to Washington, D.C.
The British Embassy and Comcast Universal held a special event yesterday, November 19, in honor of Universal Pictures’ new film, Wicked. The embassy welcomed the film’s signature costumes inspired by the lead characters, Glinda and Elphaba, to the embassy and had them on display for invited guests.
BB got the chance to check out the costumes yesterday, before the Embassy hosted its Wicked event. On display at the British Ambassador’s Residence, the Embassy staff worked extremely quickly to transform the residence into the world of Oz. Guests were invited to check out the costumes as well as enjoy a mini-reception before they were jetted off to a local theater for an advance screening of the film.
Wondering why the costumes were on display at the British Embassy? It’s because England had a heavy role in the creation of the film. Not only were some of its leads well known British actors and actresses, but the film was filmed at Elstree Studios, right outside of London. This studio was recently named the world’s most sustainable film and TV studio.
17 UK based trainees also got hands on experience during the production of the film. Through a partnership with Film London, the trainees worked in a variety of different departments to help bring this massive production to life.
The costumes, designed by Academy Award®-nominated costume designer Paul Tazewell, were beautifully displayed at the event yesterday. Up close, one could clearly see the intricate detail that went into making the beautiful costumes worn by the film’s leads, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
It was such an amazing experience to witness these costumes up close and personal. Although not open to the public, you can check out the costumes when the film is released to theaters on Friday, November 22.
